Trichomoniasis
What it is
"Trich" is a condition caused by a protozoan — a microscopic,
one-cell animal. It is a common cause of vaginal infection. More than
seven million Americans are infected with trichomoniasis every year.
Infected men usually have no symptoms, but some may experience:
• Irritation in the penis
• Mild discharge
• Burning after urination or ejaculation
Infected women may also be symptom-free, but some may experience:
• Irritation and itching of the genital area
• Vaginal discharge
• Discomfort during intercourse and urination
Symptoms, if any, usually appear within 5 to 30 days of exposure.
How it’s spread
The trichomoniasis parasite is sexually transmitted through vaginal intercourse,
mutual masturbation if fluids from one partner are passed to the genitals
of the other, or by genital-to-genital contact between women.
How it’s treated
Trichomoniasis is easily treated and cured with single-dose prescription
drug. If you are being treated for trichomoniasis, avoid sex until treatment
is complete and all symptoms have cleared up.
How it’s prevented
The only sure way to avoid trichomoniasis infection is to abstain from
sex or to limit sex to partners you KNOW to be uninfected.
Correct and consistent use of latex condoms can reduce the risk of infection.
What it does
Trichomoniasis causes internal irritation and inflammation, which can
increase the risk of HIV infection in women.
