This year Planned Parenthood’s highly trained health educators and community relations coordinators reached over 39,000 teens, young adults and families—close to 28% more than the previous year. Planned Parenthood offers a broad range of programs providing women, men, teens and their families with the knowledge they need to make responsible decisions about their health. Planned Parenthood embraces southern California’s increasing diversity and is changing with it. This was reflected in our expanded efforts to reach diverse populations through the California Endowment grant we received in 2007. We looked closely at “cultural competence” not only externally but internally as well by participating in conferences and workshops throughout southern California.
By providing our local communities with culturally and linguistically appropriate health services and programs we were also able to increase awareness of Planned Parenthood services, gather vital information, improve our delivery of programs and services and create culturally accessible resources throughout Orange and San Bernardino Counties.
In all, we reached out to over 100 community organizations, colleges, resource centers and other diverse groups through tabling events and one-on-one visits.

Healthy Bodies, Healthy Lives
Reaching more than 1,048 preteens—a 222.5% increase from the year before our Healthy Bodies, Healthy Lives (HBHL) program focuses on pre-teens, ages 9-13. Over the course of 6-8 sessions, pre-teens learn about puberty and what to expect from all of the overwhelming changes they are experiencing. This dynamic and energized approach to teaching growth and development to pre-teens is part of the core curriculum at local schools and organizations in Orange and San Bernardino Counties. It is also in compliance with the California Education Code.
