Dear Secretary Leavitt,

I am appalled at the proposal now under consideration at HHS which will endanger family planning services and undermine the health of women across the country. I strongly urge you not to release this outrageous regulation which threatens to affect Medicaid and Title X programs that are important to millions of families.

By redefining FDA-approved methods of birth control as abortifacients, this regulation could increase the need for abortion by decreasing women’s access to necessary contraception to prevent unintended pregnancy. Additionally, this radically new definition of abortion is at odds with the generally accepted scientific view that pregnancy begins with the implantation of a fertilized egg. Millions of American women are in need of medically accurate and accessible reproductive health care services to prevent unintended pregnancy, not ideologically driven attempts to undermine their health. I stand with Planned Parenthood and women and men across America against this proposal and urge you to choose women’s health over politics.
